Before beginning the topic, let us know that the term 'Nawafil' in arabic refers to non-obligatory worship, a worship that is not compulsory.
But in our society nawafil prayer have become a different prayer that is neither found in Quran nor in Sunnah.
For example now a days people offer 2 rakat prayer after the sunnah salah in maghrib prayer, and claim it to be nawafil, whereas its evidence is not found anywhere in the shariah.
So to conclude, except the obligatory, the term nawafil includes all the non-obligatory prayer like sunnah and witr salaah. Now lets see its evidence:
Narrated `Aisha, "The Prophet (ﷺ) was never more regular and particular in offering any Nawafil than the two rak`at (Sunnah) of the Fajr prayer."
Sahih al Bukhari, kitab al tahajjud, hadith - 1163.
In this hadith Ayesha r.a. has used the term nawafil for sunnah.
Now lets come to the main topic that 'It is mustahabb to separate between the obligatory prayer and the naafil prayer, by speaking or moving'. The evidence are as follows:
Umar b. `Ata' b. Abu Khuwar said that Nafi` b. Jubair sent him to al- Sa'ib the son of Namir's sister to ask him about what he had seen in the prayer of Mu`awiya. He said:
Yes, I observed the Jumu`a prayer along with him in Maqsura and when the Imam pronounced salutation I stood up at my place and observed (Sunan rak`ahs). As he entered (the apartment) he sent for me and said: Do not repeat what you have done. Whenever you have observed the Jumu`a prayer, do not observe (Sunan prayer) till you, have talked or gone out, for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had ordered us to do this and not to combine two (types of) prayers without talking or going out.
Sahih Muslim, The Book of Prayer - Friday, hadith - 2042.
An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his commentary on Saheeh Muslim:
"This offers proof for the view of our companions – i.e., the Shaafa‘i fuqaha’ – that in the case of naafil prayer, both those that are offered regularly (Sunnah prayers) and others, it is mustahabb to move from where one offered the obligatory prayer to another spot, and the best is to move to one’s home; otherwise one may move to another spot in the mosque or elsewhere, so as to increase the number of places in which one prostrates, and so as to separate the naafil prayer from the obligatory one. The words “until we spoke” indicate that separating the prayers may also be done by speaking, but doing it by moving is preferable, because of what we have mentioned. And Allah knows best."
Sharah Sahih Muslim by Imam Nawawi.
Ar-Ramli said:
"It is Sunnah to move in order to offer a naafil or obligatory prayer from the place where one offered an obligatory or naafil prayer, so as to increase the number of places where one prostrates, for they will testify in one’s favour, and because that means filling more spots with worship. And if one does not move to another spot, then one should separate the prayers by speaking to someone." End quote.
