Ruling On Raising The Hands When Offering Supplication At Grave

ro  -
Alhamdulillah..

۞ Firstly:

It is recommended (mustahab) to visit graveyard and pray for the deceased:

It was narrated that 'Alqamah bin Abi 'Alqamah, from his mother, that she heard 'Aishah say:
"The Messenger of Allah got up one night and got dressed, then he went out. I told my slave girl Barirah to follow him, so she followed him until he came to Al-Baqi. Then he stood near if for as long as Allah willed that he should stand, then he left. Barirah came back before he did and told me, but I did not mention anything until morning came, then I mentioned that to him. He said: 'I was sent to the people of Al-Baqi' to pray for them."'

Sunan an-Nasa'i, The book of funerals, hadith - 2040. Classed as Hasan by Shaykh Zubair Ali Zai.

۞ Secondly:

Is is an etiquette of supplication to supplicate with raising both hands:

Narrated Salman al-Farsi: "The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Your Lord is munificent and generous, and is ashamed to turn away empty the hands of His servant when he raises them to Him."

Sunan Abi Dawud 1488, Book of Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat): Detailed Injunctions about Witr, hadith--1488. Classed as Sahih by Shaykh Albani.

۩ A Principal regarding raising hands while supplication:

The basic principle is to raise the hands when offering supplication (du‘aa’) except in some cases where it is not prescribed to raise the hands. [source]

Imam Nawawi ,regarding this principal, said:

Chapter: It is mustahabb to raise the hands when offering supplication outside of prayer. Then he (may Allah have mercy on him) quoted a number of hadeeths which indicate that it is permissible to raise the hands when offering supplication outside of prayer.
Then he said: There are many hadeeths concerning this issue other than those I have quoted, but those that I have quoted are sufficient. The point is that it should be understood that the one who claims that raising the hands should be limited to the cases mentioned in the hadeeth is mistaken.

End quote from Sharh at-Tahdheeb, 3/489.

This means hands can be raised in any circumstances while supplication except in that circumstances in which prophet supplicated without raising his hands.

Therefore, in the light of this usool it is permissable to raise hands while supplicating at graveyard.

۩ Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked: Should supplication be offered at the grave by raising one’s hands?

He replied: If one raises the hands there is nothing wrong with it, because of the report proven from the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) in the hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), according to which he (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) visited the graves, raised his hands and offered supplication for their occupants. Narrated by Muslim.

End quote from Majmoo‘ al-Fataawa, 13/337.

A point should be noted that scholars donot permit to face grave while supplication therefore one should face qibla while supplicating for the deceased. [source]
