The Ruling About The Doubt Of Taharah

ro  -
Alhamdulillah..

The basic principal is that mere doubts or suspicion does not makes a person impure neither it nullifies wudu (ablution). One becomes impure or one nullifies his wudu only when there is certainty for this.

۞ Abdur-Rahman bin Awf said, "I said to Umm Salamah: 'Indeed I am a woman with lengthy hems, and I walk in places of filth.' So she said: 'Allah's Messenger said: "It is purified by what comes after it."

Jamia at Tirmidhi, Kitab al Taharat. hadith-143. Classed as Hasan by Shaykh Zubair ali zai.

۩ Imam Tirmidhi said:

“It is also narrated from Abdullah bin Masood r.a. that we donot use to wash our feet after passing through the filthy (dirty) areas.
There are sayings from many people of knowledge that when a person passes through the dirty area, he is not required to wash his feet except that if it is wet dirt (impurity) then in that case he should wash that impurity (on the feet).” End quote.

Jamia at Tirmidhi, Kitab al Taharat. hadith-143.

۞ Narrated `Abbad bin Tamim: My uncle asked Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) about a person who imagined to have passed wind during the prayer. Allah' Apostle replied: "He should not leave his prayers unless he hears sound or smells something."

Sahih al Bukhari, kitab al Wuzu, hadith- 137.

۩ Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak r.h. (Tabe-Tabaeen) said: “If a person is uncertain as to whether he has nullified his wudu, then he does not have to do wudu until he is so certain of it that he could swear to it.” End quote.

Jamia at Tirmizi, Kitab al Taharat. hadith-75.

۩ Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

“This hadeeth (prophetic tradition) in which the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) issued a ruling is regarded as an important shar‘i (legal) principle, which is that certainty cannot be dispelled by doubt, and things remain as they are. So long as the taharah is certain, then it cannot be changed by mere doubt. So long as the state of purity remains valid then it is to be regarded as valid until it is proven that it has been invalidated. This hadeeth offers ease and reassurance to the individual, as it keeps him far away from waswas and doubts, because by means of this hadeeth doubt is dispelled and what he is certain about remains, namely taharah.” End quote.

Fatawa Noor ‘ala ad-Darb, 56/119.
